English Language Assessments

Multilingual Learner Equity oversees the planning and implementation of all English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC), and uses these assessments to initially assess students’ academic English development, monitor their progress, and inform decisions about their program placement.

Initial English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)

All students new to the state or to the country will have their English Language acquisition level assessed within 30 days of arriving using the Initial ELPAC exam. Results will determine placement in EL program or identification as Initial Fluent English Proficient (IFEP), in which case student will not receive English Learner services.  Results will be provided to the parent/guardian.

Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)

All students identified as English Learners will be assessed annually using the Summative ELPAC exam to determine progress toward English fluency.  Assessment will take place starting in February each year.
